We hadn't realized that the pyramids were so close to Giza. We first had a close look at the pyramids and then went to a viewing spot to watch the sunset - it was amazing. To enhance the atmosphere dramatic music was piped over loudspeakers!

Yesterday I went to do a video/photo tour of Toronto's historic Gladstone Hotel that included an interview with owner / renovator and artist Christina Zeidler. Always curious I wanted to get a feel for the neighbourhood surrounding the hotel which is wedged in between West Queen West and Parkdale. This area is an interesting study of local history and sociology. A neighbourhood in transition, it has for many years been a lower income area with significant social problems. Today the neighbourhood is revitalizing, and new housing developments and loft conversions are going up all over the place. The grittier past now coexists with the brighter future.

Dozens of new cafes, galleries and funky boutiques have sprung up in the neighbourhood and I enjoyed a little walkaround along Queen Street West. I stopped in for lunch at Café Bernaté, a nice little lunch place almost opposite the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health that features 30 sandwiches with wonderful ingredients such a French brie, avocado, artichoke hearts, asparagus - the kind of foods that make my mouth water.

On the way home I stopped off on the CNE Grounds and took some shots of the Princes' Gates and the Automotive Buildings, two outstanding architectural examples of the Roaring Twenties. The Princes' Gates (often mistakenly called the "Princess Gates") were officially opened on August 31, 1927 by the two princes Edward, Prince of Wales and Prince George. Edward later became King Edward VIII. The statue at the top is called the "Goddess of Winged Victory". Today's statue is actually a copy made of plastic polymer since the original statue was replaced in 1987 because it had seriously deteriorated.

I also took some pictures of the entrance area of the Automotive Building which was constructed in 1929. Many typical Art Deco details adorn the entrance area of this building whose original purpose was to display the latest car models to the public. Today it is used for a wide variety of exhibitions, and the "Farm, Food and Fun" event is hosted here every year.

My quest for the hidden architectural and historical jewels of Toronto continues.....

For more of my travel articles check out http://www.travelandtransitions.com .

Pittsburgh: Arrival at top of Monongahela Incline

This video clip was taken on our way home from our Virginia fall vacation. We decided to break up the 11 hour drive and stay overnight in Pittsburgh, a city that I had wanted to see for a long time. Pittsburgh is known for its stunning location on the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers which together form the Ohio River. The downtown area is referred to as the Golden Triangle, and at its tip, right where the rivers converge, there is Point State Park. Unfortunately Point State Park was closed off due to renovations, but we got a good look at the diverse architecture in downtown Pittsburgh which represents an eccelectic mix of old and new. In total there are 151 skyscrapers in downtown Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh has a really interesting history, over the last few decades it has been transforming itself from an industrial centre dominated by the steel industry to a modern city that has undergone a process of revitalization. Today's Pittsburgh relies on an economic base that consists of education, tourism, healthcare, medicine and high technology. The diverse geography of the city provides great opportunities for outdoor recreation, and the city has more bridges than Venice - apparently 446 bridges in total. We explored a few of them in the downtown core.

After our mid-afternoon exploration of downtown we decided to check out Mount Washington, a residential neighbourhood on the south side of Pittsburgh, best known for its steep hill overlooking the skyline. One of Pittsburgh's unique features are its incline railways or funiculars, which connect the low-lying areas next to the river to the mountaintop. Of the 77 incline railways that used to exist here in the past only two remain: the Monongahela Incline and the more well-known Duquesne Incline. We took the Monongahela Incline which dates back to 1870, and within little more than 2 minutes and at an incline of 35 degrees we travelled up the mountain for a total distance of 194 metres. The view from the top is truly stunning, and this view has recently been named the second best vista in the United States.

We were able to enjoy the sunset from the top of Mount Washington and watch as all the skyscrapers of Pittsburgh started to light up. We also visited the Duquesne Incline and the nearby church of St. Mary on the Mount. After our descent we spent some more time at Station Square, a former railway station that has been turned into an entertainment district with numerous shopping and dining opportunities. A few hours in Pittsburgh were certainly not enough to explore this scenic and historic city, but it was enough to confirm that this city will need to be explored in further detail.

I am actually a travel writer who loves to explore international destinations. Feel free to check out some of my 700+ articles and interviews on http://www.travelandtransitions.com .

I took this video clip during my language study trip to Mexico in 2006. I spent 3 days in Mexico City -- what a fascinating experience. The remaining 2 weeks were spent in Cuernavaca where I studied Spanish at two different language schools. I also did side trips to interesting places like Taxco and Tepoztlan.

I am actually a travel writer and have written more than 700 articles from a variety of different locations. My articles are published at http://www.travelandtransitions.com. Check out my Mexico articles which can be found at http://www.travelandtransitions.com/stories_photos/mexico_2006.htm .

Early morning from the summit of Mount Teide (3,715 m)on Tenerife, Spain's highest mountain. The conditions were clear with low wind and a temperature of 0 deg C. Clearly visible are clouds of sulphurous fumes coming out from the crater.

We had a quick one day tour of Rome. It was like a historical theme park with dazzling impressions of the Colosseum, the Vatican and fountains.
